Chapter Eight

“Gracias, Rafi. See you Monday.”

Javier hung up the phone and looked in the mirror as he adjusted the collar on his shirt. He whistled and bounced on his heels as he dabbed a conservative dose of Paco Rabanne cologne at his collar and wrist. It had been a long time since he had gone on a fancy date, and a long time since he had worn a suit jacket, and he wanted to make sure he looked and smelled nice for Lissa. Javier regarded himself in the mirror with approval; he was starting to get used to the man that stared back at him. His reflection was smiling again.

“Javi,” his mother said, poking her head in his room. “Where are you going?”

Isvelda Abrantes was already dressed for bed and it was only seven thirty at night. Her silver-streaked hair was tied up in a floral scarf and despite the fact that she was clearly not leaving the house, his mother still had on a full face of makeup. She always wanted to look nice, in her words, just in case there was a fire in the middle of the night.

“I’ve got a date, Mama,” Javier said, straightening his tie.

“Anyone I know?” she asked with one perfectly drawn-on eyebrow raised.

“No, but I’ll bring her around as soon as it feels right,” he said.

His mother sighed dramatically, as he was accustomed to her doing.

“And what about Isabella? When will you bring her around again? I miss my granddaughter, you know.”

“I’m working on that.” Javier nodded. “Natalie can’t keep Izzy to herself forever. I have a lawyer working with me. I just need some time.”

“Good,” she said, nodding. Isvelda tilted her head and regarded her son appreciatively. “You look happy.”

“I am,” he said, planting a kiss on his mother’s cheek.

“Don’t be out too late,” she scolded, waving him off as she exited his room.

“We’ll see about that, Ma,” Javier called after her, smiling.

Javier combed his hair, applied another splash of cologne for good measure, and checked the time on his phone. He had just long enough to drive back to Curvature and pick Lissa up before their eight-o’clock reservation at Las Palmas. Javier glanced at his baking award on the wall and smiled at his engraved name as it glinted in the light. He nodded to himself, grabbed his car keys from his dresser caddy, and, with a spring in his step, headed out the door toward his destiny.

“Which one, the black velvet A-line or the red wrap dress again?”

Lissa stood in front of her walk-in closet biting her lower lip as she evaluated her limited selection of last-minute dinner-date dresses. Half of her wardrobe selections were too big and the other half were too low-cut. She had exactly zero time to go shopping for something new in between closing the store early and rushing back home, so whatever she already had hiding on the rack in the depths of her closet would have to do.

“Neither. They don’t have any sparkle,” Dolly said, wrinkling her nose as she uncovered a brown linen shirtdress.
